Discography : The Atlantic Label Golden Years Discography (CD Rom) |
 |
This work is a discographical listing of Atlantic label recordings, with emphasis on Jazz, Blues,
Rhythm and Blues and Soul sessions. A previous publication by the same author (Atlantic
Records: A Discography – Greenwood Press,1979) detailed all recordings made by Atlantic up
to 1979, using the numerical Atlantic master numerical listing. The present discography has been
extended up to the 2000s in selected musical fields, with a complete updating of all listed sessions,
including compact disc reissues which appeared over the years. It uses a different approach,
based on the musical style or origin, rather than on numerical masters. It has been designed as
another tribute to Atlantic founders, Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun, who have contributed to introduce
new musical concepts during the 60 years which saw the phenomenal success of the label.
Stress has been laid on the styles which were the heart of the label in its beginnings. After the mid
to late 60s, rock music became a more and more important part of Atlantic activities, originally
derived from importing music from UK groups and introducing many newartists in that field.
All rock material has been left out from the present work. Other styles are described in various
chapters which are parts of this CD-ROM.
Reissues from the Atlantic catalogue have appeared on many labels, but the primary and most
important parts have been made on the Atlantic label itself and later through the partnership
with the Rhino label, which became part of the Warner Bros. conglomerate, as Atlantic had been
already since 1967.
The discography has been divided in several independent chapters which can viewed separately:
The Early Years, covering the beginnings of the label up to end of 1954 with all styles of music:
blues, rhythm and blues, popular singer, jazz, religious (gospel), classical.
The Atco Sessions, devoted to the subsidiary label which was introduced in 1955 (that section
is limited to sessions using special Atco master numbers, up to 1958; later on all Atco sessions
used regular Atlantic master numbers).
The Jazz Sessions (1955-2001), this chapter being one of the most revered parts of the label,
with pioneering sessions by Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and many other
artists.
The Rhythm and Blues/Soul Sessions which were the heart of the label during the next 20
years: First in what was called Rhythm and Blues, with both individual artists (Ray Charles,
Lavern Baker, JoeTurner, ...) and vocal groups: The Clovers, The Coasters, The Drifters and many
others. The 60s turned to soul music with great artists like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Solomon
Burke, The Spinners.
The Stax Sessions which were a special part of the R ’N’ B field during the years 1965-1968:
that period saw an exclusive distribution contract by Atlantic, leading to many success by big
names of the Soul era: Otis Redding, William Bell, Sam & Dave and many others.
The Popular Sessions, which included several stars like Bobby Darin, Sonny and Cher, Bette
Midler, The Manhattan Transfer.
The Blues Sessions, a special niche for great blues artists (T-Bone Walker, Freddie King).
The Gospel Sessions, which include many sessions produced by the Simpson label.
The Leased Sessions, which collect material from many labels, including Reprise sessions from
the Warner Bros. stable.
The Foreign Sessions which were leased from various countries .
Another whole chapter covers Distributed Labels, with material from a myriad of small labels
and also from several more important others (Mirage, Westbound) which were distributed during
some time by Atlantic.
An Artist Index, covering all session leaders appearing in the various chapters.
Important additional chapters are devoted to record numerical listings:
Singles, with listings of records on the Atlantic label, subsidiary labels, distributed labels and
foreign series.
Albums, with listings of the Atlantic catalogue, including subsidiary and distributed labels.
Compact Disc reissues which appeared over the years, first by Rhino (many releases used both
Atlantic and Rhino logos), and Warner Bros., and also by independent labels which developed
series devoted to Atlantic material (Collectables,Collectors’ Choice, Ichiban, Koch Jazz, Wounded
Bird and also Sequel in United Kingdom).
Although those numerical listings do not pretend to cover all issues devoted worldwide to
Atlantic material, they give an overview on the Atlantic production and on some essential reissue
programs which appeared over the years. Listings covering the 1980-2000 issues have been
restricted to material described in the session listings. The files in this CD Rom are in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format and can be read, printed and searched with Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows, Macintosh and Unix based systems.
